World leaders are calling it the greatest discovery in modern history. Religious leaders are saying that its a test from God and the extra hour should be used for worship. Businesses are calling on the Government to…

PMBOK -v- Methodology

One of the more common discussions on the web and in other places is focused on arguing the merits of, or comparing, the PRINCE2 Methodology with the PMBOK Methodology.

The problem with the proposition is basic premise is completely wrong! The PMBOK® Guide is not and never has been a methodology.

That was a Decision, Really?

Tom was not surprised when Jacob and Marilyn asked for a private meeting with him. He had a hunch that some of the team was displeased with him. He thought of Jacob and Marilyn as ‘unofficial’ team leaders. They seemed to be the two people who his team members looked to for professional guidance. Tom had mixed feeling about his upcoming meeting with the two of them. On the one hand it would be a relief to find out what was wrong and on the other hand, well he was going to find out what was…

Ask for information you can use

PMOs and projects regularly collect and report on data but you have to ask how often is the data converted into information the organisation can use?

A while ago I wasted 15 minutes trying to respond to a survey commissioned by our local city council. The structure of the survey was so bad there is no way the data collected would allow any useful information to be gathered. Two of the questions (from memory) were:

  • Overall how do you rate the “The Council’s”…

A thought on PMOs and Project Controls

The quality guru W. Edwards Deming said ‘In God we trust, all other bring data’. However, developments in the Victorian Government health system a couple of years ago offer a salient reminder to any PMO manager on the need to validate data and being careful in the selection of the KPIs measured – pick the wrong KPI and you get behavior changes that are worse then before the KPI was introduced.

Victorian hospitals are rewarded for good performance and fined for poor…

How long does software development really take?

Please, Make a Decision

Over lunch, Jacob and Marilyn discussed some of the frustrations they were experiencing on one of their current projects. Jacob was a business analyst on the project and Marilyn was the subject matter expert. Jacob turned to Marilyn and said to her, “If you could say just one thing to Tom our project manager, what would it be?” Without hesitation Marilyn replied, “Please, make a decision.”

Unfortunately Jacob and Marilyn both viewed Tom as wishy-washy. He seemed to be either unwilling…
