"Well put Trevor.  Three years on the job and a passing score on a test does not equal and experienced or even qualified project manager."

Trevor K. Nelson replied to Michael Adams's discussion 'Should very experienced Project Managers be allowed to pass an experience-based examination in order to qualify for a form of PMP Certification?'
"Luuk, I'd have to disagree on your comment about the PMP. It's knowledge-based certification, not experience. Granted, three years of experience is required, but there's some debate as to whether that experience even has to have been…"

Luuk Somers replied to Michael Adams's discussion 'Should very experienced Project Managers be allowed to pass an experience-based examination in order to qualify for a form of PMP Certification?'
"As you might know, PMP is an experienced base certificate. PMBok is thought to be applicable for most Projects, most of the time.   Does a 4hour 200 question exam guarantee a good Senior Level Professional?   It helps that's for sure…"

"Excellent information.  I've just begun to study PMBoK on my own, and made an assumption that it went hand in hand."

"Fair enough Michael, that makes sense. In that case I will add this in relation to your situation and your question. Having a PMP and knowing or being able to teach the PMBoK are two different things. I know I lot of PM's that passed the PMP…"

"Very helpful recommendation and information, Trevor.  The client is looking for a Sr. Engineer/PMP (Transmission Line Project Manager) that will mentor other employees on PEMBok throughout the company."

"Michael, My first response would to ask your clients if they actually understand what the PMP is and why they're requiring it. If they're looking for 'very experienced project managers' then they're probably looking for…"

"Good point.  Does the military have a structure recognized by commercial/industry as an equivalent to PMP and/or PMI?"

"Absolutely.  I am a retired field-grade officer from the US military, have a masters degree, and several undergraduate degrees.  I've been managing projects both large and small for over 20 years but don't have a PMP. …"
