Bit about me, im an IS project manager from Australia. Hold cert's in PM and working towards a masters in ISM currently also. Been working in the automotive sector rolling out custom software builds for client facing applications. Other IS system experience in other industries have included finance and insurance. I follow the Tom DeMarco approach of managing by risk. Focus where the risks are the greatest: if the greatest risk are resources, focus on resource procurement and management, if the greatest risk is utilizing new technology perhaps prototyping or proof-of-concept is the best approach, etc...so to your questions:
how detailed? as detailed as needed to reduce the risks to a point of benefit (don't spend $10 to fix a $5 problem)

How detailed do your software projects get? Do you use templates? Do you do roll ups of all software resources? How do you handle milestone management.
